Uses

Beta-2 adrenergic agonist used as a bronchodilator for the treatment of bronchospasm in asthma and as a tocolytic agent to inhibit uterine contractions in preterm labor.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in conditions where prolonging pregnancy is hazardous (e.g., eclampsia, placenta previa, cord compression), hyperthyroidism, severe cardiovascular disease, and hypersensitivity to the drug.

Side effects

Common side effects include palpitations, tachycardia, tremor, headache, nausea, and hypokalemia with systemic use. Pulmonary edema is a rare but serious risk with IV tocolytic administration.

Warnings

Cardiovascular status must be monitored during IV administration for tocolysis. Use with caution in diabetic patients as beta-agonists can cause hyperglycemia. Hypokalemia can potentiate cardiac arrhythmias; monitor electrolytes during prolonged use.

How it works

Hexoprenaline is a selective beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist. It relaxes bronchial smooth muscle by stimulating adenylate cyclase and increasing intracellular cyclic AMP. In the uterus, it reduces the frequency and intensity of uterine contractions through the same mechanism.

Storage

Store below 25°C, protected from light and moisture. Keep in the original packaging. Do not use if the solution or tablet shows signs of discoloration.
