Uses

Oral antifungal indicated for dermatophyte infections of the skin, hair, and nails that are inadequately treated by topical therapy, including tinea corporis, tinea pedis, tinea cruris, tinea capitis, tinea barbae, and tinea unguium caused by susceptible Trichophyton, Microsporum, and Epidermophyton species.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with porphyria or hepatocellular failure, known hypersensitivity to griseofulvin, and in pregnant women due to risk of fetal harm (potential teratogenicity).

Side effects

Most common adverse effects are hypersensitivity reactions including skin rashes, urticaria, and rarely angioedema and erythema multiforme. Headache, fatigue, confusion, and gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea) may also occur. Severe skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome have been reported.

Warnings

Should not be used for prophylaxis. Monitor liver function in patients on prolonged therapy. Griseofulvin may potentiate the effects of alcohol and warfarin. Women of childbearing age should use effective contraception during and for one month after therapy.

How it works

Griseofulvin is a fungistatic agent derived from Penicillium griseofulvum. It is absorbed orally and deposited in keratin precursor cells in skin, hair, and nails, making them resistant to fungal invasion. It inhibits fungal cell mitosis by disrupting the mitotic spindle.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature, 20°C to 25°C. Protect from light and moisture.
