Uses

Caspofungin is an echinocandin antifungal indicated for empirical therapy of presumed fungal infections in febrile neutropenic patients, treatment of candidemia and invasive Candida infections, esophageal candidiasis, and invasive aspergillosis refractory to or intolerant of other therapies.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity or anaphylaxis to caspofungin or any component of the formulation.

Side effects

Common adverse reactions include fever, elevated liver enzymes, nausea, diarrhea, and infusion-related reactions such as rash, facial swelling, and pruritus. Serious reactions include hypersensitivity, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and hepatic effects.

Warnings

Monitor liver function tests during therapy. Use caution in patients with pre-existing hepatic impairment. Anaphylaxis and serious hypersensitivity reactions have been reported; discontinue immediately if they occur.

How it works

Caspofungin inhibits the synthesis of beta-(1,3)-D-glucan, an essential component of the fungal cell wall, by non-competitively blocking the enzyme glucan synthase. This disrupts cell wall integrity, leading to fungal cell lysis.

Storage

Store refrigerated between 2°C and 8°C (36°F and 46°F). Discard any unused portion of the reconstituted solution.
