Uses
This combination is used for the symptomatic relief of acute musculoskeletal pain associated with muscle spasm, such as back pain, neck pain, and musculoskeletal injuries. Ibuprofen provides analgesia and anti-inflammatory activity while methocarbamol provides skeletal muscle relaxation.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with peptic ulcer disease, severe renal or hepatic impairment, NSAID hypersensitivity (including aspirin-sensitive asthma), and in the third trimester of pregnancy. Methocarbamol is contraindicated in myasthenia gravis.
Side effects
Side effects from ibuprofen include gastrointestinal upset, peptic ulceration, and renal impairment. Methocarbamol may cause drowsiness, dizziness, headache, and nausea. Combining both may enhance CNS sedation.
Warnings
Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery due to sedation from methocarbamol. Risk of GI bleeding with ibuprofen; use with food. Do not use concurrently with other NSAIDs or anticoagulants without medical advice. Avoid long-term use.
How it works
Ibuprofen is a non-selective COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitor that reduces prostaglandin synthesis, providing analgesia, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic effects. Methocarbamol is a central muscle relaxant that depresses CNS activity to reduce skeletal muscle spasm.
Storage
Store at room temperature (15–30°C), away from moisture and direct light.
