Uses

Used for the temporary relief of nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, and sinus pressure associated with the common cold, allergic rhinitis, and upper respiratory allergies. Chlorpheniramine reduces histamine-mediated symptoms and phenylephrine acts as a sympathomimetic nasal decongestant.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients receiving MAO inhibitors or within 2 weeks of MAOI discontinuation. Contraindicated in severe hypertension, coronary artery disease, narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention, and hypersensitivity to any component.

Side effects

May cause drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, urinary retention, constipation, insomnia, palpitations, and nervousness. Rebound nasal congestion may occur with prolonged use of phenylephrine.

Warnings

May impair driving ability and mental alertness. Avoid concurrent use with alcohol or other CNS depressants. Use with caution in elderly patients, those with hypertension, diabetes, or thyroid disease.

How it works

Chlorpheniramine competitively antagonizes H1 histamine receptors reducing rhinorrhea, sneezing, and urticaria. Phenylephrine is a selective alpha-1 adrenergic receptor agonist that constricts nasal mucosal blood vessels, reducing congestion. Both components are absorbed orally with central nervous system penetration of chlorpheniramine causing sedation.
