Uses

Erythropoietin-beta is indicated for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease in patients on dialysis and pre-dialysis, and for anemia in patients with non-myeloid malignancies receiving chemotherapy.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with uncontrolled hypertension and in those with known hypersensitivity to erythropoietin-beta or any component of the formulation. Not recommended for use as a substitute for red blood cell transfusions in patients requiring immediate correction of anemia.

Side effects

Common side effects include hypertension, flu-like symptoms, headache, and injection site reactions. Serious risks include thrombotic events, pure red cell aplasia (a rare but severe complication), and worsening hypertension.

Warnings

Hemoglobin should be monitored carefully; targeting levels above 11–12 g/dL is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular events and mortality. The lowest effective dose should be used. Discontinue if pure red cell aplasia is suspected.

How it works

Erythropoietin-beta is a recombinant form of human erythropoietin that stimulates the bone marrow to produce red blood cells by binding to erythropoietin receptors on erythroid progenitor cells, thereby increasing erythropoiesis.

Store at 2–8°C in a refrigerator. Do not freeze. Protect from light.
