Uses
Echinacea dry extract is used as an herbal immunostimulant to help reduce the duration and severity of common cold and upper respiratory tract infections. It is taken at the onset of cold symptoms or as a short-term preventive measure.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with autoimmune disorders (e.g., multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis), hypersensitivity to Asteraceae/Compositae plants, and in those receiving immunosuppressive therapy.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated. Allergic reactions, including skin rash and rarely anaphylaxis, may occur particularly in individuals with plant allergies (Asteraceae family). Gastrointestinal upset has been reported. Short-term use is recommended.
Warnings
Not recommended for use longer than 8 weeks continuously. Use with caution in patients with progressive systemic diseases. Evidence of efficacy is moderate; consult a healthcare provider if symptoms worsen or persist.
How it works
Echinacea extracts contain alkylamides, polysaccharides, and caffeic acid derivatives that modulate immune function. They stimulate macrophage activity and increase production of cytokines and interferons, enhancing non-specific immune defense.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place below 25°C, away from light and moisture.
