Uses
Echinacea purpurea extract is used as an herbal immune enhancer to help prevent and reduce the duration of upper respiratory tract infections and common cold. It may be used at onset of cold symptoms or as short-term prophylaxis.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in autoimmune conditions, hypersensitivity to Asteraceae/Compositae family plants, and in patients receiving immunosuppressants. Not recommended in progressive systemic diseases such as tuberculosis.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated. Allergic reactions may occur, including skin rash and rarely anaphylaxis, especially in patients with Asteraceae family plant allergy. Mild gastrointestinal effects such as nausea or stomach upset may occur.
Warnings
Limit continuous use to no more than 8 weeks. Consult a healthcare provider if symptoms persist or worsen. Patients with known plant allergies should use with caution.
How it works
Echinacea purpurea contains alkylamides, chicoric acid, and polysaccharides that activate macrophages and natural killer cells, stimulate cytokine production, and enhance non-specific immune defense mechanisms.
