Uses
Indicated in non-pregnant women for advanced adenocarcinoma of the uterine corpus (Stage III or IV), management of amenorrhea, and abnormal uterine bleeding due to hormonal imbalance in the absence of organic pathology. Also used to test endogenous estrogen production.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in known or suspected carcinoma of the breast or other hormone-sensitive cancers, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, liver dysfunction, missed abortion, and history of hypersensitivity to the drug.
Side effects
May cause thromboembolic events (DVT, pulmonary embolism, stroke, myocardial infarction), neuro-ocular lesions, nausea, vomiting, edema, breakthrough bleeding, and injection site reactions. Jaundice and depression have been reported.
Warnings
Discontinue immediately if sudden partial or complete vision loss, onset of proptosis, diplopia, or migraine occurs. Risk of thromboembolism, pulmonary embolism, and retinal vascular lesions. Use with caution in patients with cardiovascular risk factors.
How it works
Hydroxyprogesterone caproate is a long-acting synthetic progestin ester that transforms proliferative endometrium into secretory endometrium, inhibits gonadotropin release, and supports mammary gland development. It has minor estrogenic, androgenic, and corticoid activity.
Storage
Store at room temperature (20–25°C). Protect from light. The product is formulated in castor oil; inspect visually before use.
