Uses
Used for the prevention and treatment of thromboembolic disorders, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism. Also indicated for prophylaxis of clotting during hemodialysis and prevention of DVT in surgical and high-risk medical patients.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with active major bleeding, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), hypersensitivity to nadroparin or other low molecular weight heparins, and conditions with high risk of uncontrolled hemorrhage (e.g., peptic ulcer, hemorrhagic stroke).
Side effects
Common adverse effects include bleeding at injection sites, hematomas, and thrombocytopenia. Serious risks include major bleeding complications, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT), and osteoporosis with long-term use. Local skin reactions may occur.
Warnings
Use with caution in patients with renal impairment (dose adjustment required), recent surgery, and conditions with increased bleeding risk. Monitor platelet count; if HIT is suspected, discontinue immediately and switch to alternative anticoagulant. Spinal/epidural hematomas have been reported with neuraxial anesthesia use.
How it works
Nadroparin calcium is a low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) that exerts anticoagulant effects primarily by potentiating antithrombin III activity, leading to selective inhibition of factor Xa and, to a lesser extent, thrombin (factor IIa). Its higher anti-Xa to anti-IIa ratio compared to unfractionated heparin provides more predictable pharmacokinetics and allows subcutaneous dosing without routine monitoring.
