Uses

Cefoxitin is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic indicated for serious infections including lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, gynecological infections, septicemia, bone and joint infections, and skin infections caused by susceptible organisms. It is also used for surgical prophylaxis.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to cefoxitin or other cephalosporins. Use with caution in penicillin-allergic patients due to possible cross-reactivity.

Side effects

Common adverse reactions include thrombophlebitis with intravenous administration, allergic reactions (rash, urticaria, anaphylaxis), gastrointestinal disturbances, and transient rises in liver enzymes. Clostridioides difficile-associated diarrhea may occur.

Warnings

Assess prior hypersensitivity to cephalosporins and penicillins before use. Prolonged use may lead to superinfection. Monitor renal function with prolonged therapy. Clostridioides difficile colitis may occur.

How it works

Cefoxitin inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), disrupting peptidoglycan cross-linking. It is resistant to many beta-lactamases and has good coverage of anaerobes and gram-negative organisms.

Storage

Store unreconstituted powder at room temperature. After reconstitution, refrigerate and use within the recommended period specified in the product labeling.
