Uses

Indicated as a 5% ophthalmic suspension for treatment of fungal blepharitis, conjunctivitis, and keratitis caused by susceptible organisms, including Fusarium solani keratitis.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to natamycin or any component of the formulation.

Side effects

Post-marketing data identify rare but serious adverse reactions including corneal opacity, eye irritation, eye pain, foreign body sensation, and tearing. Adherence to the corneal surface may be affected.

Warnings

Failure to improve after 7–10 days of therapy suggests the infection may be caused by a non-susceptible organism. Concomitant topical corticosteroid use should be avoided in fungal keratitis.

How it works

Natamycin is a polyene antifungal antibiotic derived from Streptomyces natalensis with activity against Candida, Aspergillus, Fusarium, and other fungi. It binds to ergosterol in the fungal cell membrane, disrupting membrane permeability and causing cell death.

Storage

Store in a cool place; protect from light. Shake well before use.
