Uses

Used for the temporary relief of symptoms associated with the common cold and flu, including nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing, minor aches and pains, headache, sore throat, and fever. The antihistamine component also aids sleep onset.

Do not use if

Contraindicated with concurrent use of other acetaminophen-containing products to avoid hepatotoxicity. Contraindicated with MAO inhibitors. Avoid using diphenhydramine concurrently with other products containing diphenhydramine. Not recommended in children under 12 without medical guidance.

Side effects

Common side effects include drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, and urinary retention due to diphenhydramine. Paracetamol is generally well tolerated; overdose can cause severe hepatotoxicity. Nervousness, dizziness, or sleeplessness may indicate excessive doses.

Warnings

Severe liver damage may occur if the maximum daily dose of acetaminophen is exceeded or if combined with other acetaminophen-containing products or alcohol. Acetaminophen may cause severe allergic skin reactions. Diphenhydramine causes sedation; avoid driving or operating machinery.

How it works

Diphenhydramine is a first-generation H1 antihistamine that blocks histamine at H1 receptors and has anticholinergic and sedative properties. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) inhibits central prostaglandin synthesis, providing analgesia and antipyresis without significant peripheral anti-inflammatory activity.
