Uses
Used for the relief of occasional constipation and to promote regularity. It may also be used as a dietary fiber supplement to help reduce cholesterol levels.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with difficulty swallowing, esophageal or intestinal obstruction, or fecal impaction. Avoid use in patients with phenylketonuria if the product contains aspartame.
Side effects
Common side effects include bloating, gas, and abdominal cramping, especially when first starting therapy. Allergic reactions including anaphylaxis have been reported rarely.
Warnings
Take with at least 240 mL (8 oz) of water to prevent choking or esophageal obstruction. Do not use if constipation persists beyond 7 days or if rectal bleeding occurs. Hypersensitivity reactions can occur, especially with occupational exposure.
How it works
Psyllium husk is a bulk-forming laxative that absorbs water in the gastrointestinal tract, swelling to form a gel-like mass that softens stool and stimulates peristalsis. Its soluble fiber also binds bile acids, contributing to cholesterol reduction.
