Uses
Used to induce or augment labor, facilitate uterine contractions, and control postpartum hemorrhage.
Do not use if
Contraindicated when vaginal delivery is inappropriate or when significant fetal or maternal risk exists.
Side effects
May cause uterine hyperstimulation, hypotension, nausea, vomiting, and fetal distress.
Warnings
Use only under close medical supervision because excessive uterine stimulation may occur.
How it works
Oxytocin stimulates uterine smooth muscle contractions and promotes milk ejection.
