Uses
Used to prevent and treat calcium and vitamin D deficiency. Indicated in osteoporosis prevention and management, hypoparathyroidism, osteomalacia, rickets, and as supplementation during pregnancy and lactation.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, vitamin D toxicity, nephrolithiasis, and severe renal impairment. Avoid in granulomatous diseases such as sarcoidosis.
Side effects
May cause hypercalcemia, hypercalciuria, constipation, nausea, and abdominal discomfort with excessive doses. Kidney stones may develop with prolonged high-dose use.
Warnings
Monitor serum calcium and urinary calcium during prolonged therapy. Avoid concurrent use of other calcium or vitamin D supplements unless prescribed. Use with caution in patients with renal impairment.
How it works
Calcium is essential for bone mineralization, neuromuscular function, and coagulation. Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is metabolized to its active form calcitriol, which enhances intestinal calcium absorption, reduces renal calcium excretion, and promotes bone health.
