Uses
Used to relieve smooth muscle spasm in irritable bowel syndrome, painful menstruation, and other conditions involving gastrointestinal or genitourinary smooth muscle spasm.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to alverine. Use with caution in patients with hepatic impairment.
Side effects
Generally well tolerated. Reported side effects include nausea, dizziness, headache, pruritus, rash, and rarely hepatotoxicity.
Warnings
Rare cases of hepatotoxicity have been reported; discontinue if signs of liver damage appear. Not recommended in pregnancy and lactation unless clearly necessary.
How it works
Alverine citrate is a direct-acting antispasmodic that relaxes smooth muscle by inhibiting calcium ion influx and acting as a selective serotonin (5-HT1A) receptor antagonist, reducing abnormal contractility.
