Uses

Anthelmintic agent used to treat ascariasis (roundworm infection) and other nematode infections. It is also used off-label as an immunomodulator in some oncology protocols.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to levamisole. Use with caution in patients with hepatic or renal impairment and in those with a history of blood dyscrasias.

Side effects

May cause nausea, vomiting, abdominal discomfort, and headache. Rare but serious adverse effects include agranulocytosis, leukopenia, and neurological disturbances.

Warnings

Monitor blood counts with prolonged use due to risk of agranulocytosis. Patients should report any signs of infection, mouth sores, or unusual bruising immediately. Avoid use during pregnancy unless clearly necessary.

How it works

Levamisole acts on nematodes by causing spastic paralysis through sustained activation of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in worm muscle tissue, leading to expulsion of the parasite. Its immunomodulatory properties include stimulation of T-lymphocyte function.
