Uses

Indicated for the treatment of relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis in adults, including clinically isolated syndrome, relapsing-remitting disease, and active secondary progressive disease, to reduce the frequency of relapses and delay disability progression.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to natural or recombinant interferon beta or to any component of the formulation. The lyophilized vial formulation is also contraindicated in patients with albumin hypersensitivity.

Side effects

Common side effects include flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, myalgia), injection site reactions, depression, and elevated liver enzymes. Serious adverse effects include hepatic injury, anaphylaxis, and seizures.

Warnings

Monitor for depression and suicidal ideation; consider discontinuation if depression occurs. Check liver function tests regularly due to risk of severe hepatic injury. Anaphylaxis and injection site necrosis have been reported.

How it works

Interferon beta-1a is a recombinant glycoprotein with antiviral and immunomodulatory properties. The exact mechanism in multiple sclerosis is unknown, but it is thought to reduce T-cell activation, decrease trafficking of inflammatory cells across the blood-brain barrier, and modulate cytokine production.

Storage

Refrigerate at 2°C to 8°C in the original carton to protect from light. Do not freeze. Once removed from refrigeration, may be stored at room temperature up to 25°C for up to 7 days.
