Uses

Used to temporarily relieve nasal and sinus congestion due to the common cold, hay fever, upper respiratory allergies, or sinusitis.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients currently taking or within two weeks of stopping an MAOI. Should not be used in patients with severe hypertension, coronary artery disease, or hyperthyroidism.

Side effects

Common side effects include nervousness, insomnia, dizziness, and increased heart rate. High doses may cause hypertension, arrhythmias, or severe central nervous system stimulation.

Warnings

Do not exceed recommended doses. Use with caution in patients with heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, or enlarged prostate. Avoid prolonged use beyond 7 days.

How it works

Pseudoephedrine is a sympathomimetic amine that acts indirectly on alpha and beta adrenergic receptors, causing vasoconstriction of nasal mucosa and reducing mucosal edema and congestion.

Storage

Store at 59–77°F (15–25°C) in a dry place, protected from light.
