Uses

Indicated for the maintenance treatment of asthma as prophylactic therapy in adults and pediatric patients 12 years of age and older. Not indicated for relief of acute bronchospasm.

Do not use if

Contraindicated for primary treatment of status asthmaticus or acute asthma episodes requiring intensive measures. Also contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to ciclesonide or any formulation ingredient.

Side effects

Common adverse effects include oropharyngeal candidiasis, nasopharyngitis, headache, and upper respiratory tract infection. Long-term use may cause adrenal suppression, reduced bone mineral density, and growth retardation in children.

Warnings

Risk of oropharyngeal candidiasis; advise patients to rinse mouth after each inhalation. May cause immunosuppression with increased susceptibility to infections including tuberculosis. Prolonged use may lead to hypercorticism, adrenal suppression, and reduced bone density; monitor appropriately.

How it works

Ciclesonide is an inhaled corticosteroid prodrug that is hydrolyzed by esterases in the lung to its active metabolite des-ciclesonide (RM1). Des-ciclesonide has a glucocorticoid receptor affinity 120 times greater than the parent compound and exerts potent anti-inflammatory effects in airway tissue, reducing eosinophil infiltration and inflammatory mediator release.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature between 15°C and 30°C (59°F–86°F). Keep away from heat and open flame. The canister should not be punctured or incinerated.
