Uses

Medroxyprogesterone acetate injectable suspension is indicated as a contraceptive in women of reproductive potential. It is also used for secondary amenorrhea, abnormal uterine bleeding, and endometriosis.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in active thrombophlebitis, thromboembolic disorders, cerebrovascular disease, known or suspected breast malignancy, and hypersensitivity to medroxyprogesterone or any component.

Side effects

Common adverse effects include menstrual irregularities, amenorrhea, weight changes, decreased libido, depression, and bone mineral density loss with prolonged use. Thromboembolic events and breast cancer risk have been reported.

Warnings

Prolonged use (longer than 2 years) may cause significant bone mineral density loss that may not be fully reversible. Not recommended as a first-line long-term contraceptive. Monitor for signs of thromboembolic disease.

How it works

Medroxyprogesterone acetate is a synthetic progestin that inhibits gonadotropin secretion, thereby preventing follicular maturation and ovulation. It also thickens cervical mucus, impeding sperm penetration, and alters the endometrium.

Store at controlled room temperature 20–25°C (68–77°F). Protect from freezing.
