Uses
Used for active immunization against invasive disease caused by Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) in infants and young children. The tetanus toxoid component serves as a carrier protein to enhance immunogenicity (conjugate vaccine).
Do not use if
Contraindicated in severe hypersensitivity to any vaccine component or after a previous severe reaction to this vaccine. Defer vaccination during acute febrile illness.
Side effects
Common reactions include local injection site pain, redness, and swelling. Systemic reactions such as fever, irritability, and drowsiness may occur. Serious adverse events are rare.
Warnings
Have epinephrine available to manage anaphylactic reactions. The vaccine does not protect against disease caused by other Haemophilus influenzae serotypes or against N. meningitidis. Vaccination records should be maintained.
How it works
The Hib capsular polysaccharide (polyribosyl-ribitol-phosphate, PRP) is conjugated to tetanus toxoid to convert it from a T-cell-independent antigen to a T-cell-dependent antigen, enabling immunological memory and protective antibody responses in infants.
Storage
Store at 2°C–8°C (refrigerated). Do not freeze. Protect from light. Discard if frozen.
