Uses

Indicated for the treatment of signs and symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), including urinary hesitancy, weak urine stream, nocturia, and incomplete bladder emptying. Not indicated for hypertension treatment.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with moderate to severe hepatic impairment and in those taking strong CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., ketoconazole, itraconazole, ritonavir). Not for use in women or children. Contraindicated with other alpha-blockers.

Side effects

Common adverse reactions include dizziness, upper respiratory tract infection, headache, and fatigue. Postural hypotension and syncope may occur, especially with the first dose or when combined with antihypertensives. QT interval prolongation is a rare concern.

Warnings

Risk of postural hypotension and syncope, particularly with initiation of therapy or when combined with antihypertensive agents or nitrates. Use with caution in patients with severe renal impairment or prolonged QT syndrome. Caution when performing activities requiring alertness.

How it works

Alfuzosin is a selective alpha-1 adrenoreceptor antagonist with selectivity for alpha-1 receptors in the lower urinary tract (prostate, bladder neck, prostatic urethra). Blockade of these receptors relaxes smooth muscle, improving urinary flow and reducing BPH symptoms.

Storage

Store below 30°C, protected from moisture and light.
