Uses

Inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) is indicated for active immunization against poliomyelitis caused by poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3. It is used in both primary immunization series in infants and children and as a booster in adults at risk.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine, including neomycin, streptomycin, or polymyxin B. Vaccination should be deferred during severe febrile illness.

Side effects

Local reactions such as pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site are common. Mild systemic reactions including low-grade fever and irritability may occur. Serious allergic reactions are rare.

Warnings

Epinephrine and other appropriate agents should be available for immediate use in case of anaphylactic reaction. Immunocompromised individuals may have a reduced immune response.

How it works

IPV contains formalin-inactivated strains of poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3. It stimulates the immune system to produce neutralizing antibodies without risk of vaccine-derived polio, providing humoral immunity against all three serotypes.

Storage

Store refrigerated at 2–8°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light.
