Uses

Indicated for the treatment of major depressive disorder and for the prevention of seasonal affective disorder. Also used as an aid to smoking cessation.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with seizure disorder, bulimia or anorexia nervosa, abrupt alcohol or benzodiazepine discontinuation, and in patients taking MAO inhibitors within 14 days.

Side effects

Common side effects include dry mouth, insomnia, headache, nausea, constipation, and increased sweating. Seizures are a dose-dependent serious adverse effect. Neuropsychiatric events including agitation and mood changes have been reported.

Warnings

Antidepressants may increase the risk of suicidal thinking and behavior in children, adolescents, and young adults. Monitor closely for worsening depression or unusual changes in behavior. Risk of seizures increases with higher doses.

How it works

Bupropion's antidepressant mechanism is not fully understood but is presumed to be mediated by inhibition of neuronal reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine. It does not inhibit monoamine oxidase or serotonin reuptake.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature between 20°C and 25°C (68°F to 77°F), protected from light and moisture.
