Uses
Fenoterol hydrobromide is a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic agonist used as a bronchodilator for the relief and prevention of bronchospasm in asthma and other obstructive airway diseases, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy, tachyarrhythmia, and known hypersensitivity to fenoterol or other sympathomimetics. Use with caution in hyperthyroidism, diabetes mellitus, and cardiovascular disease.
Side effects
Common side effects include tremor, palpitations, tachycardia, headache, and nervousness. Hypokalemia may occur at higher doses. Paradoxical bronchospasm is a rare but serious risk.
Warnings
Should not be used as the sole or primary treatment for asthma requiring regular maintenance therapy. Monitor potassium levels in high-risk patients. Excessive use may indicate deteriorating asthma control.
How it works
Fenoterol is a selective beta-2 adrenergic agonist that relaxes bronchial smooth muscle by stimulating adenylyl cyclase to increase intracellular cAMP. This results in bronchodilation and relief of bronchospasm.
