Uses

Iopamidol is a non-ionic iodinated radiographic contrast agent indicated for intra-arterial procedures including cerebral, peripheral, and visceral arteriography, coronary arteriography, and cardiac ventriculography. It is also used for intravenous procedures including excretory urography, CT imaging of the head and body, and peripheral venography.

Do not use if

No absolute contraindications listed. Exercise caution in patients with renal impairment, history of hypersensitivity to contrast media, cardiac disease, or multiple myeloma.

Side effects

Adverse reactions include hypersensitivity reactions (ranging from urticaria to anaphylaxis), acute kidney injury, cardiovascular adverse reactions, thromboembolic events, and risks associated with inadvertent intrathecal administration including convulsions and neurological injury.

Warnings

Intrathecal administration, even if inadvertent, can cause death, convulsions, cerebral haemorrhage, coma, paralysis, arachnoiditis, acute renal failure, and cardiac arrest. Pre-hydrate patients to reduce risk of contrast-induced nephropathy. Have resuscitation equipment available.

How it works

Iopamidol is a non-ionic, water-soluble, iodinated contrast medium. Intravascular injection opacifies blood vessels through X-ray attenuation by iodine atoms. It diffuses from vessels into extravascular space in most body tissues; the intact blood-brain barrier normally prevents diffusion into normal brain parenchyma.

Storage

Store in a controlled room temperature environment, protected from light. Do not freeze. Inspect visually for particulate matter before use.
