Uses

Rasagiline is a selective, irreversible MAO-B inhibitor indicated for the treatment of idiopathic Parkinson's disease, used as monotherapy or adjunct therapy.

Do not use if

Contraindicated with meperidine, tramadol, methadone, propoxyphene, other MAO inhibitors, and selective MAO-B inhibitors. At least 14 days must elapse between discontinuation and initiation of these agents.

Side effects

Common adverse effects include hypertension, orthostatic hypotension, somnolence, and daytime drowsiness. Serotonin syndrome may occur when combined with certain antidepressants. Falls and impulse control disorders have also been reported.

Warnings

May cause severe hypertension. Risk of serotonin syndrome with serotonergic drugs. Patients may fall asleep during daily activities; advise caution with driving. Monitor for melanoma, as MAO-B inhibition may increase risk.

How it works

Rasagiline irreversibly inhibits MAO-B, reducing dopamine metabolism in the striatum and thereby increasing dopaminergic neurotransmission. Its selectivity for MAO-B over MAO-A may be incomplete at higher doses or with tyramine-rich foods.

Storage

Store at controlled room temperature, 20–25°C (68–77°F). Keep in original container, protect from moisture.
