Uses

Iohexol is an iodinated, water-soluble, non-ionic radiographic contrast agent indicated for intrathecal, intra-arterial, intravenous, oral, rectal, intraarticular, and body cavity imaging procedures in adults and pediatric patients, including myelography, CT myelography, angiography, and urography.

Do not use if

Contraindicated for hysterosalpingography in pregnancy or suspected pregnancy, menstruation, within 6 months of pregnancy termination, within 30 days of cervical surgery, and in the presence of genital tract infection or neoplasia. Known hypersensitivity to iodinated contrast media is a contraindication for elective procedures.

Side effects

Common reactions include nausea, vomiting, warmth, flushing, and injection-site pain. Hypersensitivity reactions ranging from mild urticaria to severe anaphylaxis may occur. Intrathecal use carries risks of seizures, meningism, and neurological complications.

Warnings

Use only the concentrations and presentations recommended for each specific procedure. Intrathecal administration of high concentrations (140 or 350 mg iodine/mL) carries additional risks and requires special precautions. Adequate hydration should be maintained before and after administration. Monitor patients with renal impairment closely.

How it works

The iodine atoms in iohexol attenuate X-rays in proportion to the local concentration, providing time-dependent image contrast. It is distributed in extracellular fluid after intravenous administration and is excreted unchanged by the kidneys. After intrathecal administration, it is absorbed into the bloodstream and excreted renally.

Storage

Store at 20–25°C (68–77°F); excursions permitted to 15–30°C (59–86°F). May be stored in a contrast media warmer at 37°C for up to 1 month. Protect from light. Do not freeze.
