Uses

Hepatitis A vaccine is indicated for active immunization against hepatitis A virus infection in susceptible individuals aged 12 months and older. Recommended for travelers to endemic areas, persons with chronic liver disease, and other at-risk populations.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in persons with a history of severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of hepatitis A vaccine or to any component of the vaccine including neomycin. Postpone vaccination in persons with moderate or severe acute illness.

Side effects

Most common side effects are mild and transient, including pain, redness, and swelling at the injection site, headache, fatigue, low-grade fever, and loss of appetite. Anaphylaxis is a rare but serious adverse event.

Warnings

Administer with caution in immunocompromised individuals as immune response may be suboptimal. Always have epinephrine available to treat anaphylaxis. The vaccine does not protect against hepatitis B, C, or E.

How it works

The inactivated hepatitis A vaccine stimulates active immunity by inducing the production of specific antibodies (anti-HAV IgG) against the hepatitis A virus antigens. Protective antibody levels are achieved in the majority of vaccinees within 2–4 weeks of the first dose.

Storage

Store refrigerated at 2–8°C. Do not freeze. Freezing destroys the vaccine. Protect from light.
