Uses

Indicated for maintenance treatment of asthma in adults and adolescents where combination therapy (inhaled corticosteroid and long-acting beta-2 agonist) is appropriate. Also used for maintenance treatment of COPD in adults.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in hypersensitivity to fluticasone propionate, formoterol fumarate, or any excipients. Should not be used as primary treatment of acute bronchospasm or acute asthma attacks.

Side effects

Common side effects include oropharyngeal candidiasis, dysphonia, and headache from the corticosteroid component. Formoterol may cause tremor, palpitations, and tachycardia. Systemic corticosteroid effects can occur with high doses.

Warnings

Long-acting beta-2 agonists may increase the risk of asthma-related death; use only as combination therapy with inhaled corticosteroids. Patients should not stop corticosteroid therapy abruptly. Monitor for systemic corticosteroid effects with high-dose or long-term use.

How it works

Fluticasone propionate is an inhaled corticosteroid that reduces airway inflammation by suppressing inflammatory cell activity and cytokine release. Formoterol is a long-acting beta-2 adrenoceptor agonist that relaxes bronchial smooth muscle by stimulating intracellular adenylyl cyclase and increasing cAMP levels, providing 12-hour bronchodilation.

Storage

Store at room temperature (15–25°C). Protect from frost and direct sunlight. Store inhaler with mouthpiece down. Shake well before each use.
