Uses

Rabies vaccine is used for both pre-exposure prophylaxis in high-risk individuals (veterinarians, travelers to endemic areas) and post-exposure prophylaxis following potential exposure to rabid animals. Post-exposure use requires co-administration with rabies immunoglobulin in previously unvaccinated individuals.

Do not use if

For post-exposure prophylaxis there are no absolute contraindications given the fatal nature of rabies. For pre-exposure vaccination, defer in those with acute febrile illness or known hypersensitivity to vaccine components.

Side effects

Common reactions at the injection site include pain, erythema, and swelling. Systemic reactions such as headache, nausea, myalgia, and dizziness may occur. Rare hypersensitivity reactions including urticaria and anaphylaxis have been reported.

Warnings

Immunocompromised patients may have a reduced antibody response; serological testing after vaccination is recommended. Always administer with rabies immunoglobulin on first visit for previously unvaccinated patients with significant exposures.

How it works

Inactivated rabies vaccine stimulates production of virus-neutralizing antibodies. Seroconversion typically occurs within 7–14 days of completing the primary series, providing protective immunity against rabies virus infection.

Storage

Store at 2°C to 8°C (refrigerated). Do not freeze. Protect from light.
