Uses
Meningococcal polysaccharide vaccine (Groups A and C) is indicated for active immunization against invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis serogroups A and C. It is used in individuals at increased risk including travellers to endemic areas, military recruits, and during outbreak control.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in individuals with known hypersensitivity to any component of the vaccine. Vaccination should be postponed in persons with acute severe febrile illness.
Side effects
Local reactions such as pain and redness at the injection site are common and transient. Mild systemic reactions including low-grade fever and malaise may occur. Severe allergic reactions are rare.
Warnings
This polysaccharide vaccine is less immunogenic in children under 2 years of age and does not provide long-lasting protection; conjugate vaccines are preferred for young children. Immunocompromised individuals may have reduced vaccine response.
How it works
The vaccine contains purified capsular polysaccharides of N. meningitidis serogroups A and C. These antigens stimulate production of bactericidal antibodies against the respective serogroups, providing protective immunity.
Storage
Store refrigerated at 2–8°C. Do not freeze. Protect from light.
