Uses
Used with diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in severe renal impairment, metabolic acidosis, diabetic ketoacidosis, and hypersensitivity to metformin.
Side effects
Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal discomfort, bloating, and decreased vitamin B12 levels may occur.
Warnings
May rarely cause lactic acidosis, especially in patients with renal impairment or serious illness.

Biguanide antihyperglycemic agent that decreases hepatic glucose production and improves insulin sensitivity.
