Uses

Indicated for active immunization against varicella (chickenpox) in individuals from 12 months of age. Recommended for susceptible children, adolescents, and adults who have not had varicella disease.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women, and patients with a history of anaphylaxis to neomycin or gelatin. Defer vaccination in persons with active febrile illness or active untreated tuberculosis.

Side effects

Common reactions include injection site pain, redness, and swelling. A mild varicella-like rash may develop in a small percentage of recipients. Fever is common. Rarely, serious adverse events such as pneumonia, encephalitis, or secondary bacterial infection may occur.

Warnings

Vaccine recipients should avoid contact with immunocompromised individuals or pregnant women if a varicella-like rash develops post-vaccination. Salicylates should be avoided for 6 weeks after vaccination due to the risk of Reye's syndrome. Ensure availability of epinephrine for anaphylaxis management.

How it works

The live attenuated varicella-zoster virus (Oka strain) replicates in the vaccinated host and induces cell-mediated and humoral immune responses. Antibodies against varicella surface glycoproteins protect against primary infection and reduce the severity of breakthrough disease.

Storage

Store frozen at -15°C or colder. Once reconstituted, administer promptly and discard any unused portion. Keep away from light.
