Uses

Ioversol is a non-ionic iodinated radiographic contrast agent used for intra-arterial procedures including cerebral, peripheral, visceral, renal, and coronary arteriography, as well as intravenous procedures such as CT imaging of the head and body, venography, and pediatric angiocardiography.

Do not use if

Contraindicated in patients with symptomatic hyperthyroidism. Should not be administered intrathecally under any circumstances.

Side effects

Adverse reactions may include hypersensitivity reactions (ranging from mild urticaria to anaphylaxis), contrast-induced acute kidney injury, cardiovascular events, and nausea or vomiting. Inadvertent intrathecal administration can cause severe neurological injury.

Warnings

NOT FOR INTRATHECAL USE — inadvertent intrathecal administration can cause death, seizures, cerebral hemorrhage, coma, and other severe neurological events. Use with caution in patients with renal impairment, history of allergies, or thyroid disease, and ensure adequate hydration to reduce nephrotoxicity risk.

How it works

Following intravascular injection, ioversol opacifies blood vessels by virtue of its high iodine content, enabling radiographic visualization of internal vascular structures. It is rapidly excreted unchanged by the kidneys through glomerular filtration and is visualized in the renal parenchyma within 30–60 seconds of intravenous injection.

Storage

Store at 25°C (77°F); excursions permitted between 15°C and 30°C (59°–86°F). Protect from strong daylight and direct sunlight. Discard unused portions of opened containers.
