Uses
Used in the management of Parkinson's disease, either as monotherapy or as an adjunct to levodopa. Also used for chronic cerebral insufficiency and peripheral arterial disease to improve symptoms of poor circulation.
Do not use if
Contraindicated in cardiovascular shock and acute myocardial infarction. Use with caution in patients with a history of psychosis or those taking antipsychotic medications.
Side effects
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and hypotension. Neuropsychiatric effects such as hallucinations or confusion may occur, especially in elderly patients.
Warnings
May cause excessive daytime sleepiness and sudden sleep onset; patients should be cautioned about driving. Monitor blood pressure regularly due to risk of orthostatic hypotension.
How it works
Piribedil is a dopamine D2/D3 receptor agonist with alpha-2 adrenoceptor antagonist properties. It stimulates dopaminergic receptors in the brain, improving motor function in Parkinson's disease and enhancing cerebral and peripheral blood flow.
